What is UVa-Wise NewMedia?
UVa-Wise NewMedia, a department of the Office of Information Technology, is a public service of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. The NewMedia operation is charged with the regional cable TV and Internet streaming video publication of campus events and dissemination of College announcements and event news. This operation, in partnership with the CAV-TV student organization, is focused on the
production of video content to 1.) positively promote The University of Virginia's College at Wise regionally and nationally, 2.) provide access to College academic and athletic events, speakers, and special interest discussions, 3.) promote College schedules and announcements and 4.) air educational television on various topics ranging from natural science to music and the arts to our regional students from early high school to college ages as well as teachers teaching at these levels.
The Department of Media Services will manage programming and production content in partnership a student management staff comprised of CAV-TV student organization members. Educational experience and student engagement is a prime reason for this operation. Students from across the College in various major programs will have the opportunity to produce programming for the operation, giving them experience in technical, writing, graphic arts, and public speaking aspects of broadcast media.
When there are no scheduled programs slated, a bulletin board of campus events and announcements as well as periodic news, weather, sports and financial updates are available along with audio from our WVTF/ WISE public radio partnership with Virginia Tech.
This new digital resource at UVa-Wise has a number of uses and has the potential to engage our region in educational and intellectual development and inquiry. UVa-Wise NewMedia is the future for digital communication and public engagement for The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Special UVa-Wise NewMedia biography of Joseph C. "Papa Joe" Smiddy, first chancellor of UVa-Wise / Clinch Valley College
UVa-Wise NewMedia provides video content ranging from campus speaker events to campus news. Secondarily, UVa-Wise NewMedia is also a partner with Annenberg Media for educational programming content. CAV-TV student-produced special programming events will be aired throughout the academic year and will focus on campus life and event information from a student point of view.
UVa-Wise Events
NewMedia coverage and professional production of campus events, speakers and the arts is foremost in priorities for the operation. Broadcast of these events help the College to reach out to the region with educational content while increasing visibility of UVa-Wise as an educational leader in the region. National promotion of the College through this content will be done via web streaming and will show the best of UVa-Wise campus life, programs and educational resources.
UVa-Wise NewMedia also produces special focus programs of interest to the public at-large interested in the College, Appalachian region and culture and academic topics. The first of these special productions was the recent four-disc documentary of Joseph C. "Papa Joe" Smiddy, the first Chancellor of Clinch Valley College (now The University of Virginia's College at Wise).

CAV-TV Student Programming
CAV-TV productions are meant to engage the College student body with student-interest programming and news. Student production and programming will be done on a regular basis and will have an educational component in learning the “tools of the trade” for production, writing, speaking and planning. Annenberg Media Educational Programming
Annenberg Media educational programming is meant to engage regional Comcast Channel 55 and national web streaming viewer in educational inquiry with a variety of educational programming. This programming will offer a variety of topics and will be promoted on a regular basis to the public especially area high schools.

Sessions from the 2009 UVa-Wise Technology Symposium are now being broadcast over UVa-Wise Comcast Channel 55 and online streaming video now. 2009 Symposium Keynote Speakers Karen Jackson, Deputy Secretary for Information Technology Karen Jackson serves the Commonwealth of Virginia as the Deputy Secretary for Information Technology for Governor Timothy Kaine's administration. Jackson promotes and advocates for information technology infrastructure development for Virginia businesses and government. She has been a strong supporter of entreprenuerism in Virginia and a tireless organizing force behind broadband development in Southwest Virginia. Glen "Skip" Skinner, Executive Director Glen ‘Skip’ Skinner serves as the Executive Director of LENOWISCO Planning District Commission. He has previously served as County Administrator of Wise County, Virginia; He attended the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance. Construction begins on $30 million Convocation Center at UVa-Wise
State lawmakers and regional leaders joined The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Wednesday to break ground for a $30 million Convocation Center, the largest single capital project in the College’s history. When the Convocation Center is completed in two years, the facility will seat 3,000 for sporting events and 4,000 for concerts or convocation activities. The facility will give the region its first venue to seat large crowds, something economic developers have said is needed to boost growth and development in far Southwest Virginia.
