Update on Public Safety at UVa-Wise

From Steve McCoy, Director of Public Safety

It’s time to begin a new academic year, and as you are aware, there are multiple construction projects currently underway around campus. While these projects signify tremendous growth which is exciting, they will also require changes in campus parking and traffic flow.

Every effort has been made to maintain adequate Faculty & Staff spaces, designated in red, around campus as we proceed with these projects. There are now 153 spaces designated on campus for Faculty & Staff parking spaces and while we have a greater number of employees (currently 187), we are not all usually on campus at the same time. Also, please be reminded that these red spaces are designated for all faculty and staff on a first-come, first-serve basis; they are not designated for nearby or adjacent building employees. Additionally, your red employee parking decal permits you to park in any designated lot, including student parking areas.

I would ask that you take a moment to review the following specific changes:

  • Crockett Hall project—McCraray Hall lot has been designated for Faculty and Staff use only as this project continues. The McCraray Hall lot provides 55 spaces to almost fully replace the 56 spaces lost when the Crockett Hall lot was closed.
  • Theatre project— A 26-space portion of the Thompson & Asbury Hall lot has been designated for Faculty & Staff parking. These spaces replace the 25 spaces lost with the closing of the gravel lot at the Theatre.
  • Science Center project— This project will require the service road to the Zehmer Hall lot to be closed starting at the curb, however the lot will remain open. Additionally, two trailers to be used for temporary science labs during the project will be placed in the upper campus Faculty & Staff parking area adjacent to commuter student parking. Additional Faculty & Staff spaces will be designated in the commuter parking area to replace these lost spaces.
  • Greear Gym— There are a total of 70 Faculty & Staff spaces designated at Greear Gym, including spaces adjacent to the Gym, the Humphreys Tennis Complex, and the softball complex.

I wish you all good luck with the upcoming year and thank you for your support during this time of transition and growth as we work together to accommodate our many vehicles and ensure the safety of all drivers on campus.
